Jargon exists in almost every profession or hobby: carpentry, acting, boating,
and now, fanfic writing. For your convenience, I have compiled some of the most common fanfic jargon and their definitions.
- OOC: Out of Character. Enjolras getting wasted or Javert prancing about in a Regency
gown would be very OOC.
- OMC: Original Male Character. A male character created by a fanfic author, not
featured in Les Miserables.
- OFC: Original Female Character. A female character created by a fanfic author, not
featured in Les Miserables.
- AU: Alternate Universe. A story in which Enjolras survived the insurrection would
be AU.
- Slash: A homosexual male/male relationship. Common genres include Enjolras/Grantaire
and Javert/Valjean.
- Femmeslash: A homosexual female/female relationship. I've only ever seen Cosette/Eponine
in the Les Mis fandom.
Het: A heterosexual relationship.
Drabble: A story in exactly 100 words
Fluff: Plotless fic. Often involves cuddling.
One-shot: a one-chapter fic (also called a Ficlet).
Canon: the original text. In the case of Les Mis, it's the book by Victor
Hugo. No, not the musical, though some may choose to take this as their canon.
The Brick: "Les Miserables" (so called because it's 1500+ pages long). Also called
The Tome.
Beta-reader: a proofreader/editor
OTP: One True Pairing. In the case of Les Miserables, Cosette/Marius is the OTP.
